At the same time, COP30<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">the World Climate Conference held deep in the Brazilian Amazon<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">was bringing together most of the international community, which continues to argue that hydrocarbon extraction must come to an end.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><br \/>\nGreece is now required to operate on multiple levels simultaneously. It is strengthening its geopolitical role, yet it is also becoming part of a network of alliances and strategic demands that require maximum strategic foresight and coherence.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The Transatlantic Energy System and Russia\u2019s Relative Decline<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">By rapidly upgrading its infrastructure, Greece is emerging as Europe\u2019s most critical southern gateway for U.S. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The Vertical Corridor linking Alexandroupolis<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">(Greek city and port in the northeastern region of Thrace, near the Greek-Turkish border)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> to Ukraine<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">via Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">is progressively replacing Russian gas flows and laying the foundations for a new, multi-layered security architecture.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Although Russian gas is retreating, Moscow still retains tools capable of generating disruption. Genuine energy independence will only be achieved when Europe<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">not just Greece<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">acquires sufficient storage capacity, interconnectivity and institutional resolve to prevent any strategic return of Russian gas to the market.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>3. <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><b>America\u2019s <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Come Back<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><b> and the New Extraction Doctrine<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Washington has re-entered the region as the most assertive strategic actor in the Eastern Mediterranean. With the return of President Trump, U.S. energy policy exhibits an unexpected continuity of intent: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">\u201cDrill, baby, drill\u201d<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">not merely as a slogan, but as a strategic compass.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Within this framework, Greece is being upgraded, but not in a neutral way. Cooperation with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">with the American energy company<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">ExxonMobil in the Ionian Sea <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">(<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">in the west of Greece on the maritime border with Italy in the Adriatic Sea<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">with the American energy company<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Chevron south of Crete <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">(<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">a large Greek island in the south of Greece on the maritime borders with Egypt and Libya in the Libyan Sea<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">aligns Greek energy choices directly with U.S. geopolitical and corporate priorities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Regarding the Ionian, official statements clarify that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">exploratory<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> drilling will be assessed within the next 1\u20132 years, while the probability that any future extraction proves economically viable remains low<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">estimated at only 15%\u201318%.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Meanwhile, American interest in seabed research in the zone between Libya and Crete carries a pronounced political dimension. U.S. diplomacy has already moved toward mediating between Greece and Libya, as well as between Egypt and Libya. These diplomatic channels revived the proposal for a regional Eastern Mediterranean Conference.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">While the agreements unlock geopolitical momentum, they also raise a central question: Is Greece leveraging the opportunity as an autonomous strategic actor<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">or is it becoming a key instrument in the execution of the new U.S. energy geostrategy?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">It must also be underlined that extraction activities on a non-delimited continental shelf are prohibited under International Law. Neither the continental shelf nor the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) can be delimited unilaterally by Greece. An agreement with the state possessing opposite (or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">\u201cadjacent\/opposite\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">) coasts is mandatory. Therefore, dialogue with the internationally recognized Libyan government in Tripoli is not optional<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">it is the only legal and realistic path forward.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">4.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Europe\u2019s Green Policy<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">European green policy has recently shown signs of inconsistency and oscillation. Nevertheless, despite the energy crisis triggered by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the shift in U.S. energy priorities, and the rise of far-right forces in Europe calling for a reversal of the green transition, the European Union remains formally committed to a non-fossil future: by 2050, it aims to eliminate all fossil fuels<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">not only coal and oil, but also natural gas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">From this perspective, Greece risks being perceived in certain EU circles as a country returning to fossil fuels. As the Eastern Mediterranean is already considered a global <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">climate-crisis hot spot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">, Greece should have been positioning itself at the forefront of clean-energy leadership.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">COP30 also highlights the widening global climate financing gap. Emerging economies still receive only a small fraction of the funds required for green transition<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">creating pressure on Europe as well, which is now expected to reconcile energy autonomy with environmental alignment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Greece: Neither a Superpower nor a New <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">El<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> D<\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">orado<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Greece is gaining status as a key node in the emerging European energy-security system, attracting investment interest, deterrence advantages and strategic leverage. Yet the same momentum carries risks: long-term dependence on U.S. LNG, potential price volatility, environmental pressures and greater exposure to hybrid threats.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Moreover, even if extraction projects advance over time<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">despite environmental concerns, particularly in tourism-sensitive regions<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"> &#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">another strategic question arises: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Where will this gas be sold<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">, if Europe is structurally exiting fossil-fuel consumption?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Greece requires strategic cohesion and a deep understanding of Europe\u2019s regulatory and geopolitical reality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The Eastern Mediterranean Is Transforming in Real Time\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The wider region spanning Cyprus, Israel, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Crete,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> and Libya is entering a period of exceptional strategic mobility.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The transfer of natural gas, electricity, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">hydrogen,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> and other energy forms from the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and North Africa toward Europe increasingly passes through the Eastern Mediterranean. After the freezing of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">the Russian<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> energy supply, the region\u2019s strategic value has risen even further.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The future India\u2013Middle East\u2013Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) could turn the region into a strategic link in a new system integrating trade, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">energy,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> and data flows.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">However, none of these projects can proceed without resolving ongoing disputes, overlapping maritime <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">claims,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> and EEZ demarcation conflicts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The settlement of the conflict in Gaza, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">international support for the normalization of the situation in Syria, the delimitation of the Lebanese-Israeli EEZ with American mediation,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"> as well as the effort to expand the &#8220;Abraham Accords&#8221; for rapprochement and diplomatic mutual recognition between Israel and moderate Arab countries (with the main objective of Saudi Arabia&#8217;s participation), also aim at the implementation of the aforementioned plans.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><b>Closing a circle and opening a new one: Turkey and the next day<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">U.S. policy is expected to assign roles to all major regional actors. Turkey<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">holding the longest mainland coastline in the Eastern Mediterranean and carrying substantial geopolitical weight<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">will inevitably hold a seat and influence in future arrangements.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Greek\u2013Turkish disputes in the Aegean and the unresolved Cyprus issue cannot be allowed to obstruct major regional planning. Security of supply and investment protection will effectively <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">drive<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"> solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">The parties involved must immediately take initiatives to resolve their disputes, through direct negotiations and\/or through a joint appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\">They should demonstrate political will to find mutually acceptable and beneficial solutions.
